Ok, so half a US gallon is nearly 2 litres, which is something more than three pints.

That sounds about right. I can tell the days where I've not drunk enough water, but oddly on many of those days I simply don't feel thirstly.

500 calories a day does seem extreme; on the other hand, we can go for a lot longer without food than we think. The key thing is drinking enough water.

A few years back, I had a kidney infection that landed me in the hospital. I had been on an antibiotic for a few days, but I wasn't feeling much better. I had no appetite, I was losing weight, and I was getting scared. When I was in the hospital, the doctor said that the problem was dehydration, not lack of food. She said that we can live without food for awhile, but that we can't get far without adequate amounts of water. After getting an IV with 2L of fluid, I felt *much* better.

Like you, I've often confused hunger with thirst, and I'm learning that I'm usually more thirsty than hungry. I drink a half-gallon of water each day (not all at once!) and it makes a big difference to my health.

Hi Rachel,

Ah yes - now I've read your comment I remember the posting on your site that described your evening eating.

I find it very interesting how it didn't occur to me - and it doesn't look like it occurred to you either - what the cause was for a long time.

I never questioned it - I just ate, because it felt like the right thing to do.

Crikey! A 500 calorie a day diet doesn't sound any more healthy than over-eating!

I'm going to try not to eat as much. I've managed to do this before, for a while at least. I won't be counting calories - simply asking myself whether I'm really hungry or not, and only eating if I am.

Will it work? Maybe. We'll see.

James, I completely relate to this post. I'm a late-night snacker, and once I was diagnosed with AS, I finally figured out why. It isn't hunger. It's a relaxing, winding down ritual--one to which I'm very attached. Fortunately, I exercise and don't overeat during the day, so I'm still at a healthy weight. On the other hand, I'd like to find a different relaxation ritual; as I get older, I know that my body isn't going to be burning as many calories as it used to. It's very difficult, though. Food has equalled comfort for most of my life, and it's difficult to give that up.
